Florida News That Impacts You – March 29th, 2024

  • Governor DeSantis has signed the Individual Wine Containers bill into the law. The new law, which takes effect July 1st, will eliminate restrictions on the size of the sale of wine within the state up to 15 liters which is the equivalent of about four gallons. Under current law consumer wine sales are restricted to one gallon or less per container.  
  • Congressman Brian Mast held a press conference on Thursday demanding that east-west discharges from Lake Okeechobee are stopped. The enhanced discharges have been taking place since mid-February and have been monitored by marine biologists to be at known damaging levels for over 30 days straight most recently. The Army Corps said they’ll institute a two-week “pause” on discharges starting Saturday and will provide an update next Friday about how they intend to resume discharges.  
  • The Palm Beach County commission shot down a plan to widen 140th Avenue and 40th Street in Loxahatchee. The proposal was recently introduced for the purpose of easing traffic congestion but was opposed by many in the community.  
  • A third dog recently under the care of Palm City pet groomer and boarder Pawsitively Paradise has died and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the company, said they are concerned there could be other deaths. The Sheriff’s Office is asking any pet owners whose pet was injured, sick or died after having been under Pawsitively Paradise’s care contact the sheriff’s office.  
  • Nice weather today with highs in the upper 70’s, which is typical for this date. We’ll have similar weather tomorrow with a warming trend that will bring temps back into the 80’s by Sunday. 
  • Gas prices rose for a third straight day to new highs for the year. The average price statewide for regular unleaded is currently $3.62 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.79 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.69 and in Indian River County the average is $3.65 per gallon.
