Three men were arrested by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office on charges of stealing $80,000 from a senior in New York.
The men are accused of using a grandparents scam that we've reported on. It involves tricking elderly victims into believing that their grandchild is in jail and needs a large sum of money to get out.
The 78-year old Long Island man received a call earlier this month from someone claiming to be an attorney for the victim's grandson, saying that "Austin" had been in a car crash and needed help. He said he needed nearly $10,000 sent by FedEx to an address in Surfside, Florida.
The victim received a few more calls over the next few days from different people claiming more and more cash was needed.
Finally, the Sheriff's Office was advised that a package containing $22,000 was supposed to be delivered to a Boynton Beach address via FedEx. Once the money was accepted by one of the suspects, all three were taken into custody.
Two of the men are from Miramar while a third lives in Baltimore.
