A Palm Beach County Sheriff's K-9 Deputy was honored at a Memorial Ceremony Thursday.
Cigo was killed on Christmas Eve in the parking lot of the Mall at Wellington Green, shot by a suspect who was wanted for an unrelated attempted murder charge.
Sheriff Ric Bradshaw has received some criticism for his agency's choice of a mall at the holidays being the place where the arrest-attempt happened.
He says that after they received the tip that the suspects were in the mall, it was the only good option.
"We're not going to let somebody go that is a danger to the community. So you're second option is you let them get in the car that you've located in the parking lot and then you get into a car chase and they could kill an innocent family that's driving in a car or take somebody hostage or even get away. Option three is exactly the right thing to do."
He tells us that a perimeter was set up around the area of the lot where it went down and nobody was allowed in there. The incident occurred about 150 yards from the entrance to the food court at the mall.
"We don't get to pick the day and the time. I mean, do you think that we, all of us here wanted to be out on Christmas Eve doing this or at the mall? No. This wouldn't have been an area we picked, they picked it."
