More local municipalities are getting license plate readers installed to keep an eye on stolen cars among other things.
Jupiter Police Chief Dan Kerr.
"Our arrests for the year are up significantly because of these license plate readers. I think the word's getting out to some of the bad guys that maybe places like West Palm, Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter are not the places that you want to go if you're driving a stolen vehicle or if you're going to take that stolen vehicle to go and commit other crimes like robberies or car burglaries. It's probably not the place you want to come to."
He says the readers also help his officers find people who have outstanding warrants when they drive into the town and they're helping to locate missing individuals.
Chief Kerr says the town is using four readers and they're portable.
"We put them in key areas...entries and exits of our communities."
He says the department has two more readers budgeted for this year. They cost $35,000 each and are paid for in part by money seized from criminals.
