The West Palm Beach Planning Board Tuesday night approved the Okeechobee Business District by a 3 to 2 vote.
The city is now a step closer to building a 25 story Class-A office building in the downtown area.
Residents against the plan say the five-block stretch of development on both sides of Okeechobee Boulevard would hurt traffic and be too close to the waterfront. Opponents especially don't like the proposed 25 story building that would go up near Flagler Drive and the Intracoastal.
Proponents of the plan, including the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches, say the development will attract more big employers. West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio has also been pushing the plan.
The Downtown Action Committee will next get the proposal, before the City Commission votes within a couple of weeks.
