Florida News That Impacts You – April 15th, 2024 

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.      

  • Governor DeSantis signed two bills into law heading into the weekend. The Law Enforcement and Correctional Officers bill and Impeding, Threatening, or Harassing First Responders bill. The new laws create Civilian Oversight Boards for law enforcement in local communities which will work as conduits between communities and law enforcement agencies. Going forward the harassment of a first responder while performing their duty will be prohibited. Also, sheriffs will receive $5,000 pay raises. 
  • While providing an operational update in advance of this year’s hurricane season, Citizens Property Insurance CEO Tim Cerio said “we’re coming through to the other side” of the property insurance crisis. Citizens has now depopulated over 390,000 policies from peak levels reached in the first half of last year following the entrance of numerous property insurance companies following legislative reforms.   
  • Florida Atlantic University will build a Holocaust museum following a significant donation of money and artifacts from Craig and Barbara Weiner. The 2,000 square foot museum will be built on the Boca Raton campus within the Jewish Studies Building. Construction will begin this summer. 
  • Another warm and pleasant day today with highs in the low 80’s, about three degrees warmer than usual for this date. Temperatures are expected to gradually rise through the week. 
  • Gas prices dropped a bit lower through the weekend. The average price statewide for regular unleaded is currently $3.51 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.72 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.56 and in Indian River County the average is $3.55 per gallon.
