Protecting The Palm Beaches - Boynton's Jeffrey Katz Says Goodbye

It's the final appearance of Boynton Beach Police Chief Jeffrey Katz on "Protecting the Palm Beaches."

He's leaving the department this month to head up the Chesterfield County, Virginia Police Department.  Katz goes from a city with a population of 75,000 to a county with a population of 340,000 and will have a staff of 700 working under him.

"It's a much larger jurisdiction, but I've met with the command staff up there already and some of the personnel.  I'm very impressed with the agency and I'm very excited to be joining it."

Katz would have served 20 years with the Boynton PD had he stayed until February.  He's been chief for the past four years.

"I've learned so much and really had an opportunity to be involved with some great people, doing some great things.  You know, after a while, I'm a native Floridian...so yeah, I like the mild changes of season.  And I'm a big fan of American history, and so much of our nation's history took place in Chesterfield County and the Richmond area.  I think the people are very nice.  I think this is a place where I'd like to start the next chapter of my life, both professionally and personally."

Katz calls his move bittersweet.

"There are a lot of people that I care about and just flat out love.  I admire and respect so many people in the organization, in the police department as well as in the greater city and in the community.  That's always tough, when you spend two decades of your life growing up with people...you know, I was in my mid-twenties when I started in Boynton and so I've watched people that I've worked with...I've watched their kids grow up and go to college and become school teachers and professionals.  That part of your life is something that you don't really ever walk away from.  And then to start a new chapter, it's both I think exciting and also sad."

He says he's pleased with the state of the police department and the city in general.
