8 Dead After Evacuation Of Florida Nursing Home

The Broward County, Florida Medical Examiner's Office confirms eight people are dead after a Hollywood nursing home lost power during Hurricane Irma.  Police entered the home this morning and found the victims and no power and no air conditioning.  Hollywood Police Chief Tomas Sanchez said today that officers found the power out and sweltering conditions inside.  The center has been without power since Hurricane Irma slammed the area this week.

Sanchez added that he cannot say if the people died as a result of the air conditioning failure and a "criminal investigation" is underway to determine the exact cause of the deaths.  Several other people in the home are critical. The "Sun Sentinel" reports 115 seniors were also evacuated from the facility after sweltering for days.

Officers are being deployed to every nursing home in Hollywood to carry out welfare checks.

Earlier reports said Florida Power and Light had been called for several days to fix the power issue at the home, but crews had not yet been able to make it out there yet.
