Florida News That Impacts You – April 22nd, 2024

Bottom Line: Your daily recap of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

  • A new school safety database has been established in a collaboration between the University of Florida and Safe School for Alex, the nonprofit established by Max Schachter who lost his son Alex in the attack at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018. The initiative was funded through a $2 million federal grant and is now live at SchoolSafetyDashboard.org. The database is said to be the most comprehensive school safety resource in the country.
  • Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has discovered over 186,000 marijuana derived products targeting minors being sold across the state – 644 of which contained THC. The products were commonly presented as candy with bright packaging. The state issued stop-sale orders to all distributors of the products.
  • In West Palm Beach, Saturday’s public comment meeting, which was part of a listening tour by city officials regarding proposals for the City’s waterfront, included a consistent theme from residents. There’s a desire not to move forward with a marina, and a desire to make the space more usable for residents and visitors. City officials backed off an original proposal to build a marina following public backlash.
  • Cooler temps with a chance of a brief thunderstorm and scattered showers throughout the day as a cool front moves into our area. Highs in the low 80’s, which is typical for this date. We should have pleasant weather for the rest of the week.
  • Gas prices moved lower through the weekend though they’re still higher than a week ago. The average price statewide for regular unleaded is currently $3.56 per gallon. In Palm Beach County the average price is $3.77 per gallon, in Martin the average is $3.63 and in Indian River County the average is $3.59 per gallon.
